Daniel J. Levitin

Born: December 27, 1957 – San Francisco, California, United States

Daniel J. Levitin is a neuroscientist, cognitive psychologist, and writer whose work explores music cognition, aging, critical thinking, and the brain. He is best known for This Is Your Brain on Music, The Organized Mind, and Successful Aging. His books have been international bestsellers translated into more than 20 languages.

Biography & Author's Journey

Daniel J. Levitin came to authorship through two careers that eventually fused into one. As a young Californian, he left high school early for MIT, spent time at Stanford, Fresno State, and Berklee, and built a first life in music as a performer, producer, and A&R figure in the Bay Area. At 415 Records he helped develop artists and sharpened the habits of close listening that later became central to his scientific work. The decisive turn came when classes in neuropsychology at Stanford began to pull harder than the commercial record business. He returned to formal study, completed his A.B. at Stanford in 1992, earned an M.Sc. in 1993 and Ph.D. in 1996 at the University of Oregon, and followed with postdoctoral research at Stanford Medicine and UC Berkeley.
