Biography & Author's Journey

Dan Ariely is an Israeli-American professor, author, and renowned behavioral economist whose trajectory has been shaped by extraordinary personal experiences and rigorous scholarship. Born in New York City in 1967 and raised in Israel, Ariely’s formative years included both intellectual curiosity and resilience. A tragic accident in high school, where he suffered burns to over seventy percent of his body, forced him to endure long, painful treatments. This episode redirected Ariely’s academic focus: moving from physics and mathematics at Tel Aviv University to philosophy, and ultimately to psychology, where he graduated in 1991. He went on to earn a master’s and Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from UNC-Chapel Hill, and later a second Ph.D. in business administration from Duke University, encouraged by Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman.

Quotes

quote
individuals are honest only to the extent that suits them (including their desire to please others)
-Predictably Irrational
quote
Ownership is not limited to material things. It can also apply to points of view. Once we take ownership of an idea — whether it’s about politics or sports — what do we do? We love it perhaps more than we should. We prize it more than it is worth. And most frequently, we have trouble letting go of it because we can’t stand the idea of its loss. What are we left with then? An ideology — rigid and unyielding
-Predictably Irrational
quote
Giving up on our long-term goals for immediate gratification, my friends, is procrastination
-Predictably Irrational
quote
We all want explanations for why we behave as we do and for the ways the world around us functions. Even when our feeble explanations have little to do with reality. We’re storytelling creatures by nature, and we tell ourselves story after story until we come up with an explanation that we like and that sounds reasonable enough to believe. And when the story portrays us in a more glowing and positive light, so much the better
-The Honest Truth About Dishonesty
quote
Resisting temptation and instilling self-control are general human goals, and repeatedly failing to achieve them is a source of much of our misery
-Predictably Irrational
quote
Even the most analytical thinkers are predictably irrational; the really smart ones acknowledge and address their irrationalities
-Predictably Irrational
quote
We usually think of ourselves as sitting the driver's seat, with ultimate control over the decisions we made and the direction our life takes; but, alas, this perception has more to do with our desires-with how we want to view ourselves, than with reality
-Predictably Irrational
quote
Good decisions come from good systems, and good systems come from understanding and correcting our irrational behaviors
-The Best of Dan Ariely
quote
We have very strong intuitions about all kinds of things — our own ability, how the economy works, how we should pay school teachers. But unless we start testing those intuitions, we’re not going to do better
-TED Talk: Are We In Control of Our Own Decisions?
quote
Our behaviors are driven by forces that we often don't understand, and the biggest challenge is to understand these forces and change our behavior accordingly
