Struggling with self-criticism? Explore how don Miguel Ruiz and Carlos Castaneda use Toltec wisdom to break old agreements and reclaim your energy.

The world we see isn’t necessarily the only world, but just where our spotlight is currently shining. Most of the stress we feel comes from invisible stories and agreements we’ve inherited without even realizing it.
The Toltec perspective views life as a collective "Dream of the Planet," which is a rigid system of rules, beliefs, and social agreements we inherit from birth. This process, known as "domestication," trains us to perceive reality through a specific lens of judgment and fear. Most of the stress and internal conflict we experience comes from these invisible stories we’ve adopted without realizing they are illusions rather than our authentic selves.
Being impeccable with your word goes beyond simply telling the truth; it treats speech as a form of creative magic. In this tradition, your words can either be used to create or destroy, similar to casting "spells." Using your word against yourself through self-criticism or against others through gossip is considered a form of "black magic" that drains your energy. Impeccability means aligning your intent with truth and love to stop the cycle of emotional drama.
Making assumptions creates a "fog" in our minds where we fill in gaps of knowledge with our own fears and insecurities. We often construct elaborate, negative stories about others' intentions and then act as if those stories are the absolute truth, leading to unnecessary sadness and conflict. By having the courage to ask clarifying questions instead of assuming, we clear our mental space and foster more authentic relationships.
This agreement acts as a safety net that makes the entire spiritual system sustainable by dismantling perfectionism. Because "your best" is a moving target that changes depending on whether you are sick, tired, or healthy, it encourages self-compassion rather than self-judgment. If you slip up on the other agreements, acknowledging that you did your best in that moment prevents the "inner judge" from using the mistake as a reason to cause further emotional suffering.
The Three Masteries provide the "engine" for personal freedom: Awareness, Transformation, and Intent. The Mastery of Awareness involves noticing the "dream" and the internal dialogue of the judge. The Mastery of Transformation is the active work of replacing limiting old agreements with empowering new ones. Finally, the Mastery of Intent is the ability to direct your energy and focus to shape your own reality, moving from being a passenger in the dream to becoming a co-creator.
