Explore The Illusion of Mastery and learn why we forget 90% of what we read. Discover how to overcome the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve and improve memory retention.

Stop optimizing for 'books read per year' and start optimizing for 'ideas retained and used.' One book that you deeply internalize and apply is worth ten books that you read but forgot within a month.
How to improve your memory. I tend to read things and within a few weeks I forget everything I had read and understood at the time

The forgetting curve is a concept mapped out by psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus in the 1880s. It demonstrates that without active reinforcement, the human brain naturally loses information at a rapid rate. Research shows that we typically lose about half of what we learn within a single hour and up to 90% of that information within one week.
Forgetting is actually a result of biological efficiency. Your brain acts as a filter to keep its workspace uncluttered by discarding data it perceives as irrelevant. When we engage in passive absorption—simply following sentences without interacting with the material—the brain does not see a reason to prioritize that information, leading it to be discarded quickly.
To improve memory retention, you must move beyond passive absorption. Since the brain naturally discards 90% of new data to maintain biological efficiency, you need to provide reinforcement to signal that the information is important. By understanding the science of learning and the forgetting curve, you can transition from simply liking a book to actually retaining its substance.
