It is a common misconception that a lighter airplane is safer during an engine failure; however, a heavier airplane actually has a lower (better) Vmc. This is because a heavier aircraft has more inertia and requires a higher angle of attack to maintain flight, which contributes to greater directional stability. A lighter airplane has less resistance to the yawing moment created by the operating engine, making it harder to maintain control at lower airspeeds.
This is a methodical three-step procedure designed to prevent the catastrophic mistake of shutting down the wrong engine. First, the pilot "Identifies" the failed engine using the "dead foot, dead engine" rule (the leg not providing rudder pressure is on the side of the failed engine). Second, the pilot "Verifies" the failure by retarding the throttle of the suspected engine to see if there is a change in performance. Finally, once confirmed, the pilot "Feathers" the propeller to reduce drag and secure the engine.
