This drastic reduction occurs because climb performance is dependent on excess thrust—the power available beyond what is required to maintain level flight. VMC stands for Minimum Control Airspeed. It is the absolute slowest speed at which a pilot can maintain directional control of the aircraft with the critical engine inoperative.
