    El enmascaramiento es una estrategia de supervivencia donde niños con autismo o TDAH crean un "personaje" o disfraz social para encajar y evitar el rechazo. Consiste en imitar gestos, sonrisas, tonos de voz y ensayar guiones sociales para parecer neurotípicos. Aunque les ayuda a evitar el acoso escolar a corto plazo, este esfuerzo constante consume una energía brutal y puede ocultar su verdadera identidad, retrasando diagnósticos importantes.

    Las niñas suelen tener una mayor motivación social y una capacidad innata para el camuflaje más sofisticada que los niños. Sus intereses pueden estar más integrados socialmente (como los animales o la lectura) y tienden a ser complacientes y calladas en el colegio, lo que las hace "volar bajo el radar". En España, esto provoca que el diagnóstico en niñas pueda retrasarse una media de 14 meses respecto a los varones, llegando a veces hasta la adultez.

    Es un fenómeno donde un niño que se ha comportado perfectamente en la escuela explota emocionalmente al llegar al hogar. Esto ocurre porque el niño ha agotado toda su energía regulando su comportamiento y manteniendo la "máscara" durante el día. Al llegar a su zona segura, su sistema nervioso se descarga, provocando gritos, llanto o irritabilidad. No es falta de disciplina, sino una señal de agotamiento extremo tras un esfuerzo sobrehumano por encajar.

    El uso constante de la máscara puede llevar al "burnout autista", un agotamiento profundo que puede causar la pérdida de habilidades previamente adquiridas. A nivel físico, se manifiesta en dolores de cabeza, problemas de sueño y dolores de estómago debido a que el cuerpo permanece en un estado de "lucha o huida". Emocionalmente, genera una fragmentación de la identidad, baja autoestima y ansiedad crónica al sentir que su forma natural de ser es inaceptable.

    Lo principal es crear "zonas seguras" donde el niño no necesite permiso para ser él mismo y pueda realizar sus conductas de autorregulación sin juicio. Se debe validar su esfuerzo diario, permitirle descansos sensoriales y fomentar la autodefensa, enseñándole que está bien pedir ayuda o no mantener el contacto visual si le resulta doloroso. El objetivo es que el entorno se adapte al niño para que él no tenga que romperse tratando de adaptarse al entorno.
