No es solo una costumbre, sino una estructura interna que rige nuestra forma de caminar, hablar, comer y reaccionar ante los demás. Funciona como una brújula invisible que nos hace sentir cómodos en ciertos espacios sociales y fuera de lugar en otros, transformando la desigualdad social en algo que percibimos como "natural" o propio de nuestra personalidad.

    Bourdieu plantea que lo que llamamos "gusto" es en realidad un sistema de distinción social. Las élites presentan sus preferencias culturales y modales como dones naturales o una sensibilidad superior, cuando en realidad son capital cultural heredado. Al clasificar algo como "elegante" o "vulgar", las personas están marcando su posición en la jerarquía social. Esto permite que la desigualdad económica se disfrace de mérito personal, haciendo creer que los privilegiados están en la cima por ser "mejores" y no por haber tenido un entrenamiento distinto.

    El poder no solo se mide por el dinero (capital económico), sino por otros tres recursos fundamentales. El capital cultural incluye los conocimientos, títulos académicos y modales heredados o adquiridos. El capital social se refiere a la red de contactos y relaciones que pueden abrir puertas o multiplicar otras ventajas. Finalmente, el capital simbólico es el prestigio y el reconocimiento que hace que los demás validen los otros capitales como legítimos. Estos capitales pueden intercambiarse entre sí en diferentes "campos" o espacios de la sociedad.

    La violencia simbólica ocurre cuando la escuela impone la cultura de las clases dominantes como si fuera la única cultura universal y válida. Al evaluar a todos los alumnos bajo códigos que solo algunos aprendieron en su casa (como el lenguaje culto o ciertas referencias artísticas), el sistema beneficia a los "herederos" del capital cultural. Lo más grave es que, cuando un alumno falla, el sistema le hace creer que es por falta de talento o esfuerzo personal, ocultando que la verdadera razón es una desventaja social de origen.

    Aunque el habitus genera una inercia muy fuerte, no es un destino cerrado. Es posible acumular capital cultural a través del tiempo y el esfuerzo, aprendiendo los códigos de otros campos sociales como si se tratara de un segundo idioma. Sin embargo, el guion del podcast sugiere que el primer paso para la emancipación es la conciencia: entender que nuestras limitaciones o sentimientos de inferioridad no son fallos personales, sino el resultado de estructuras sociales diseñadas para excluir.
