Richard Dawkins

Born: March 26, 1941 – Nairobi, Kenya

Richard Dawkins is a British evolutionary biologist, ethologist, and popular science writer renowned for advancing the gene-centered view of evolution, most notably in his influential book The Selfish Gene. He is also known for his public advocacy of atheism, particularly through The God Delusion, and has had a major impact on science communication and debates on religion and evolution.

Biography & Author's Journey

Richard Dawkins was born in Nairobi, Kenya on March 26, 1941, where his father was stationed during World War II. In 1949, his family returned to England, and Dawkins was educated at Oundle School before enrolling at Balliol College, Oxford. There, he earned a BA in zoology in 1962, followed by MA and DPhil degrees in 1966 under the guidance of Nobel laureate ethologist Nikolaas Tinbergen. Dawkins describes his childhood as having a conventional Anglican upbringing, yet he was an early skeptic, first doubting the existence of God at the age of nine. His understanding of evolutionary theory during adolescence persuaded him that natural processes could explain life's complexity without requiring a designer.

We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further

quote
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference

Mutation is random; natural selection is the very opposite of random
-The Blind Watchmaker

We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born

What worries me about religion is that it teaches people to be satisfied with not understanding the world they live in
-Heart Of The Matter: God Under The Microscope
quote
Let children learn about different faiths, let them notice their incompatibility, and let them draw their own conclusions about the consequences of that incompatibility. As for whether they are ‘valid,’ let them make up their own minds when they are old enough to do so. By all means let's be open-minded, but not so open-minded that our brains drop out
-The God Delusion
quote
Religious faith not only lacks evidence, its independence from evidence is its pride and joy, shouted from the rooftops
-Richard Dawkins Quotes
quote
An atheist is just somebody who feels about Yahweh the way any decent Christian feels about Thor or Baal or the golden calf. As has been said before, we are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further
-TED Talk on Militant Atheism
quote
The total amount of suffering per year in the natural world is beyond all decent contemplation... The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference
-River Out of Eden
quote
We are survival machines—robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes… A monkey is a machine that preserves genes up trees; a fish is a machine that preserves genes in the water
