Jonathan Rosenberg emerged from the earliest generation of web-native cartoonists, building a career before “creator economy” became standard language. He graduated from Cornell University in 1995 with a biology degree, worked as a website design consultant, and then began publishing Goats in 1997. That strip, with its dense continuity, absurdist humor, and internet-speed responsiveness, became the central turning point in his professional life. By 2005, Goats.com was drawing more than 80,000 readers on many days, and Rosenberg was openly talking about making the leap to full-time cartooning; he did so in 2006, turning a side pursuit into a sustainable independent practice.
