Erich Fromm

Born: March 23, 1900 – Frankfurt am Main, Hesse, Germany

Erich Fromm was a German-American social psychologist, psychoanalyst, and humanistic philosopher known for exploring the relationship between psychology and society. His influential works, including Escape from Freedom and The Art of Loving, have sold widely and shaped intellectual discourse on individuality, love, and ethics in the twentieth century.

Biography & Author's Journey

Erich Fromm was born on March 23, 1900, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, into an orthodox Jewish family. His upbringing was marked by his parents’ strict traditions and personal difficulties, such as his mother's depression and his father's volatile temperament, which fostered early introspection and sensitivity to human suffering. Experiences during World War I and the suicide of a friend further shaped his curiosity about irrationality and mass behavior. Fromm’s academic journey began with studies in law and sociology before he earned his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in 1922. He subsequently trained in psychoanalysis in Berlin, laying the groundwork for his lifelong pursuit of understanding the interplay between psychology, society, and culture.
