Donald A. Norman

Born: December 25, 1935 – Brooklyn, New York, United States

Donald A. Norman is an American cognitive scientist, usability engineer, and design theorist whose work centers on human-centered design, cognition, and everyday usability. He is best known for The Design of Everyday Things and Emotional Design, and for co-founding the Nielsen Norman Group, shaping modern UX practice, design education, and product development.

Biography & Author's Journey

Donald A. Norman’s career grew out of an unusually mobile childhood and an early fascination with invisible systems. Born in New York on December 25, 1935, he spent his youth moving with his father’s Public Health Service assignments, living in different parts of the United States and in El Salvador. As a boy he became absorbed by electronics, earned an amateur radio license, and found in electrical engineering a way to join technical rigor with curiosity about how things work. He studied electrical engineering at MIT, then earned an M.S. in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. in mathematical psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, a combination that would define the rest of his work.
