Explore the physics of effort as we define work and energy. Learn why mental strain isn't mechanical work and how force and displacement transfer energy.

The Physics of Effort: Understanding Work and Energy

Best quote from The Physics of Effort: Understanding Work and Energy

    “

Work is just the name for the transaction—the way you move 'currency' into or out of an object’s account. Once you see work as a transaction, you start to see that every movement in the universe is just energy shifting from one pocket to another.

    Frequently Asked Questions

In the world of physics, work has a very narrow and specific definition that differs from everyday effort. It is defined as applying a force to move an object over a specific distance in the same direction as that force. Even if you experience significant mental strain or exhaustion from a task, a physicist would say you have done zero joules of work unless there is physical displacement of an object caused by that force.

The 'Energy Account' is a helpful way to visualize energy transfer. In this system, work is the name of the transaction used to move 'currency' into or out of an object's account. For example, when you lift a heavy rock, you are performing work by applying upward force to move it upward. This process effectively deposits energy into the rock's account, changing its state through mechanical work and displacement.

According to the physics of effort, if you carry a rock across a level lawn at a constant speed, no work is being done on the rock in the direction of your movement. This is because work requires the force and the displacement to be in the same direction. While you might feel tired, the universe's accounting system for effort only recognizes work when the force applied results in movement along that same path.
