You can bomb a regime out of existence, but you can’t bomb a democracy into existence. It’s a high-stakes moment where the U.S. is essentially trying to bomb its way to a deal or a new government.
Operation Epic Fury was a massive, multi-domain military assault conducted by U.S. and Israeli forces against the Iranian regime. The operation utilized a combination of stealth aircraft, Tomahawk missiles, and low-cost "LUCAS" swarming drones to overwhelm air defenses. Key targets included the Intelligence Ministry, drone launch sites, naval assets, and high-ranking leadership figures, resulting in the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several top military advisors.
According to the Iranian constitution, an interim three-person leadership council has taken control to prevent total internal collapse. This council currently consists of the reformist president Masoud Pezeshkian, the hardline head of the judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and Alireza Arafi, a high-ranking cleric who leads the Basij paramilitary force. While this trio attempts to maintain administrative stability, the permanent successor is meant to be chosen by the Assembly of Experts, a panel of 88 elderly clerics.
LUCAS stands for Low-Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System. These are "kamikaze" drones that cost approximately $35,000 each, modeled after Iran’s own Shahed drone designs. The U.S. employed a strategy called "affordable mass," flooding Iranian airspace with hundreds of these inexpensive drones to saturate and exhaust air defense systems. This allowed more expensive assets, like F-35 stealth fighters and Tomahawk missiles, to strike high-value targets with much higher effectiveness.
Several figures have been identified as potential successors or power brokers, though each faces significant hurdles. Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader, has deep ties to security forces but faces criticism because the Islamic Republic was founded on opposing hereditary monarchy. Ali Larijani is considered a pragmatic "bridge" candidate who might appeal to the West, though he lacks top-tier religious credentials. Additionally, there is a strong possibility that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) might bypass clerical traditions altogether to establish a military junta.
Analysts warn that the sudden "decapitation" of Iranian leadership could lead to a "failed state" scenario similar to Syria rather than a transition to democracy. Potential risks include a "warlord" scenario where individual IRGC commanders seize control of different provinces, or a "nuclear breakout" where a dying regime attempts to build a weapon as a last resort. Furthermore, the collapse of central authority could lead to regional instability, as Iran's various proxy groups may go rogue or retaliate against neighboring Gulf nations.
