Struggling with complex circuit boards? Learn how diodes and transistors work together so you can accurately troubleshoot EASA Part-66 electronics.

A diode acts like a one-way street for electrons; if you don't understand that 'one-way' rule, you’re going to have a hard time troubleshooting any power supply or signal path.

The depletion region is a thin, insulating "no man's land" created at the junction where P-type and N-type silicon materials meet. When these materials touch, electrons and holes recombine, leaving behind charged ions that create an internal electric field. This field acts as a physical barrier—requiring approximately 0.7 volts for standard silicon—that prevents current from flowing until enough electrical pressure is applied. Understanding this barrier is essential for troubleshooting because if a diode passes current in both directions, it indicates that this physical barrier has been destroyed.
While a standard rectifier diode is designed to block current in reverse bias and can be destroyed if the voltage exceeds its limit, a Zener diode is specifically engineered to operate safely in the "reverse breakdown" region. It acts like a pressure relief valve, blocking current until a very specific voltage threshold is reached, at which point it conducts just enough to keep the voltage pinned at that level. This unique characteristic makes Zener diodes vital for voltage regulation in sensitive aircraft avionics, ensuring power rails remain stable.
The difference lies in the "sandwich" of materials and the polarity required to activate the component. An NPN transistor consists of a P-type material layer between two N-type layers and is turned on by applying a positive voltage to the Base relative to the Emitter. In contrast, a PNP transistor features an N-type layer between two P-type layers and is activated by pulling current out of the Base. Technicians can test these using a multimeter's diode setting, as both types essentially function as two PN junctions joined at the Base.
Logic gates are arrangements of transistors and diodes that produce specific outputs based on various input conditions, following the rules of Boolean logic. For example, an "AND" gate might ensure the landing gear only retracts if the weight-on-wheels sensor confirms the plane is airborne and the pilot moves the lever. Technicians use "truth tables"—charts that define the expected output for every possible input combination—to determine if an Integrated Circuit (IC) is functioning correctly or if it has failed internally.
A closed-loop system uses feedback to ensure that a mechanical component, like a rudder, actually reaches the position commanded by the pilot. Unlike an open-loop system, which sends power and "hopes" for the best, a closed-loop system uses sensors like synchros or resolvers to measure the actual position and send that data back to a controller. The controller compares the commanded position with the actual position and continuously adjusts the power to eliminate any "error signal," allowing for precise control even in turbulent conditions.
