Before thermometers, heat was just a feeling. Learn how pioneers like Galileo and Fahrenheit turned invisible air into the precise scales we use today.

Best quote from Measuring temperature and the history of thermometers

    “

We went from being 'at the mercy' of the heat to being able to harness it, measure it, and use it to build our world; it represents a transition from a subjective feeling to a measurable fact.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Early devices were "open systems," meaning the glass tube was open to the outside air. Because the liquid level was affected by the weight of the atmosphere, the readings would change based on barometric pressure rather than just temperature. A storm rolling in could cause the water level to rise even if the temperature remained exactly the same, making the device a confusing hybrid of a thermometer and a barometer.

In 1654, Ferdinando II de' Medici created the first "closed system" by filling a tube with alcohol and melting the glass tip shut. This isolated the liquid from the outside atmosphere, ensuring that the expansion or contraction of the fluid was caused solely by thermal energy. This breakthrough allowed for the birth of the modern thermometer, as it removed interference from air pressure and provided a reliable way to measure heat alone.

Gabriel Fahrenheit designed his scale for mathematical convenience and precision. He set the freezing point of water at 32 so that there would be exactly 64 degrees—a power of two—between freezing and the human body temperature (which he originally measured as 96). This made the scale easy to divide without calculators. Later, the scale was adjusted so that the boiling point of water was 212, leaving exactly 180 degrees between freezing and boiling, a highly divisible number that simplified scientific calculations.

Absolute Zero is the theoretical temperature where all molecular motion stops, calculated to be -273.15 degrees Celsius. Lord Kelvin and other scientists discovered this point by observing how gases behave; they noticed that as a gas cools, its volume shrinks by a predictable fraction. By plotting this trend on a graph, they found that all gases point toward a single "floor" where volume would theoretically become zero, representing the absolute bottom of the universe's temperature scale.

Temperature measures the speed of molecular vibration, but Joseph Black discovered that heat can also be "hidden" during a phase change. For example, when ice melts, it absorbs a significant amount of energy, but its temperature stays at exactly 32 degrees Fahrenheit until all the ice has turned to water. This "latent heat" is the energy used to break the bonds between molecules rather than increasing their "jiggle" speed or temperature.
