Si cualquiera de estas dos capacidades es nula, la comprensión total será cero, por lo que ambas deben trabajarse de forma conjunta.

    La lectura funciona como un gimnasio cerebral que activa diversas áreas simultáneamente, como la corteza visual para crear imágenes mentales y la corteza prefrontal para el análisis lógico. Entre sus beneficios documentados se encuentra la reducción del estrés en hasta un 68%, la mejora de la empatía y la inteligencia emocional, y el fortalecimiento de la "reserva cognitiva". Esto último ayuda a retrasar síntomas de enfermedades neurodegenerativas y, según estudios citados, puede aumentar la esperanza de vida en un promedio de dos años.

    Para consolidar el hábito, que puede tardar entre 66 y 254 días, es fundamental priorizar la constancia sobre la cantidad. Se recomienda definir un propósito concreto, como leer 15 minutos diarios en un mismo lugar y hora para crear un ritual. Además, es vital elegir temas que despierten una curiosidad genuina para activar el sistema de recompensa del cerebro (dopamina) y eliminar distracciones digitales, como las notificaciones del móvil, para permitir que la atención no se fragmente.

    La prevención debe comenzar entre los 3 y 5 años mediante el desarrollo de la conciencia fonológica, que consiste en jugar con los sonidos del lenguaje oral sin necesidad de usar letras todavía.
