Discover how batteries measure charge percentage, the physics of lithium-ion capacity, and what happens when a battery is fully charged or completely drained.

The percentage on your screen is not a direct measurement at all; it is a highly sophisticated, mathematically complex, intelligent guess known as a State of Charge estimation.
How does a battery know its % of charge? What is happening when a battery is fully charged at capacity and when it is fully drained and there is no charge left?

A battery determines its state of charge using a Battery Management System (BMS) that monitors voltage levels and electron flow. In lithium-ion physics, as the battery discharges, the voltage drops in a predictable pattern. The BMS compares the current voltage against known benchmarks for that specific battery chemistry to estimate the remaining capacity, providing the percentage you see on your device screen.
When a battery reaches 100% capacity, the internal chemical reaction has moved as many lithium ions as possible to the anode. At this stage, the Battery Management System must stop the charging process to prevent overcharging and potential damage. The battery is at its highest potential energy state, with the ions ready to flow back toward the cathode to power your device.
A drained battery occurs when the mobile ions have moved from the anode back to the cathode, leaving no potential energy to create an electrical current. While your device shows 0%, the battery usually retains a tiny amount of reserve power to protect its internal chemistry. If a battery stays completely empty for too long, it can suffer permanent damage and lose its ability to hold a charge.
Battery charge percentage is an estimate based on voltage and historical usage data. Over time, factors like temperature changes and chemical degradation can make it harder for the Battery Management System to accurately calculate the state of charge. This is why a phone might occasionally jump from 10% to 1% or shut down unexpectedly, as the physical capacity no longer perfectly matches the digital reading.
