    Conocida popularmente como "la Pepa", la Constitución de 1812 fue un hito revolucionario redactado en una ciudad asediada por los franceses. Su importancia radica en que transformó a los súbditos en ciudadanos al establecer por primera vez la soberanía nacional, la división de poderes y la libertad de imprenta. Aunque tuvo un impacto práctico limitado durante la guerra y fue derogada por Fernando VII a su regreso en 1814, se convirtió en un símbolo mundial del liberalismo y sentó las bases del Estado moderno en España y América.

    La invasión napoleónica y el cautiverio de Fernando VII crearon un vacío de poder que las colonias americanas aprovecharon para formar sus propias Juntas de Defensa, imitando el modelo peninsular. Aunque inicialmente estas juntas gobernaban en nombre del rey, la experiencia de autogobierno y el descontento previo de los criollos con el monopolio comercial español impulsaron el deseo de independencia total. La posterior negativa de Fernando VII a negociar y su insistencia en el absolutismo radicalizaron estas posturas, llevando a las campañas militares definitivas de líderes como Simón Bolívar y San Martín.

    Las Guerras Carlistas fueron conflictos civiles que estallaron tras la muerte de Fernando VII en 1833 debido a una disputa sucesoria.
