The tension stems from the fact that Paul never met the living Jesus, basing his entire authority on a private vision on the road to Damascus. While the original apostles like Peter and James lived and walked with Jesus, learning his ethical "Gospel of the Kingdom," Paul developed an abstract theological system centered on the death and resurrection. This created a power struggle, evidenced in the New Testament where Paul sarcastically refers to the Jerusalem leaders as "super-apostles" and admits to opposing Peter to his face over religious practices.
Although the Gospels appear first in the Bible, Paul’s letters were actually written and circulated decades before the accounts of Mark, Matthew, Luke, or John. Critics, including historical figures like Thomas Jefferson and Jeremy Bentham, argue that Paul stripped away the localized, Jewish ethical requirements of Jesus to make the faith "portable" and compatible with the Roman Empire.
