Explore the mechanics of manipulation and the Dark Triad. Learn to identify tactics like paltering and triangulation used in relationships and the boardroom.

Dark psychology is essentially the inverse of high emotional intelligence. Instead of using empathy to build bridges, it’s used to find the cracks in the foundation.
Dark psychology

Dark psychology describes how individuals use their understanding of human behavior and emotions to influence or control others for personal gain. It is often viewed as the inverse of high emotional intelligence; rather than using empathy to build bridges, practitioners use it to find cracks in a person's foundation. These patterns frequently play out in everyday environments like boardrooms, personal relationships, and online interactions, often leaving victims feeling drained or doubting their own memories.
The Dark Triad is a specific framework consisting of three overlapping personality traits: narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. These traits are central to the mechanics of manipulation, as they drive individuals to use their understanding of human psychology to exploit others. By studying the Dark Triad, people can better understand the underlying motivations and behaviors of those who use psychological tactics to gain an unfair advantage in social or professional settings.
Manipulation often involves subtle moves that are difficult to detect. Paltering is a tactic where someone tells the literal truth but uses it to create a false impression or tell a lie. Triangulation occurs when a third person is pulled into a situation to create drama or tension between parties. Recognizing these specific behaviors, along with other Dark Triad traits, provides a necessary framework for spotting manipulation and protecting oneself from being at a disadvantage in a conversation.
