    L'avantage absolu, théorisé par Adam Smith, signifie qu'un pays est simplement plus productif que les autres pour fabriquer un produit donné. En revanche, l'avantage comparatif de David Ricardo démontre qu'un pays a intérêt à se spécialiser là où il possède le coût d'opportunité le plus bas. Cela signifie qu'un pays doit choisir l'activité où il est le "moins mauvais" par rapport aux autres, même s'il n'est le meilleur dans aucun domaine, afin de maximiser la production mondiale totale.

    Le modèle HOS (Heckscher, Ohlin, Samuelson) explique que l'avantage comparatif d'un pays provient de ses dotations factorielles, c'est-à-dire l'abondance de ressources dont il dispose sur son territoire. Selon cette théorie, un pays va exporter les biens qui nécessitent une utilisation intensive des facteurs de production qu'il possède en grande quantité, comme la terre, le travail (main-d'œuvre) ou le capital (machines et technologie). Par exemple, un pays avec beaucoup de main-d'œuvre se spécialisera dans le textile.

    C'est ce qu'on appelle le commerce intra-branche, un concept mis en avant par Paul Krugman. Contrairement aux théories classiques, les pays développés échangent souvent des produits similaires en raison de la différenciation des produits et des économies d'échelle. Les consommateurs recherchent des variétés différentes (comme choisir entre une voiture française ou allemande), et les entreprises se spécialisent sur des segments précis pour réduire leurs coûts unitaires en produisant pour le marché mondial.

    L'internationalisation de la chaîne de valeur désigne la stratégie des firmes multinationales consistant à fragmenter leur processus de production en plusieurs étapes géographiques. Au lieu de fabriquer un produit de A à Z dans un seul pays, elles localisent chaque tâche (conception, fabrication des composants, assemblage, marketing) là où les conditions sont les plus avantageuses. Cela permet de jouer sur la compétitivité-prix (bas salaires) ou la compétitivité hors-prix (innovation et savoir-faire qualifié).

    Le protectionnisme est souvent utilisé pour protéger les emplois nationaux, en particulier pour les travailleurs moins qualifiés qui subissent la concurrence des pays à bas salaires. Un autre argument majeur est le "protectionnisme éducateur" de Friedrich List, qui suggère de protéger temporairement les industries naissantes le temps qu'elles deviennent assez fortes pour affronter la concurrence mondiale. Enfin, de nouveaux enjeux comme la souveraineté économique et l'écologie (protectionnisme vert) poussent les États à limiter certains échanges pour des raisons de sécurité ou de climat.
