    El efecto organizador ocurre principalmente durante el desarrollo fetal, donde las hormonas actúan como planos de construcción que definen la estructura física del cerebro. Alrededor de la séptima semana de gestación, la presencia o ausencia de andrógenos marca una bifurcación en el desarrollo de habilidades cognitivas. Por ejemplo, una mayor exposición prenatal a andrógenos suele relacionarse con una mayor inteligencia espacial y capacidad de rotación de objetos, mientras que otras configuraciones favorecen las habilidades verbales y la fluidez del lenguaje.

    El cortisol, la hormona del estrés, tiene efectos opuestos en diferentes partes del cerebro. En el hipocampo, encargado de la memoria, el exceso de cortisol actúa de forma erosiva, encogiendo las dendritas de las neuronas y bloqueando la formación de nuevos recuerdos. Por el contrario, en la amígdala, que es el centro del miedo, el estrés hace que las neuronas crezcan y se ramifiquen más. Esto provoca que la persona se vuelva más torpe para razonar pero mucho más sensible y reactiva ante posibles peligros.

    El sistema digestivo es considerado un "segundo cerebro" porque contiene más de quinientos millones de neuronas y produce el 90% de la serotonina del cuerpo. Existe una comunicación bidireccional constante a través del nervio vago. Si la microbiota intestinal está desequilibrada o el intestino está inflamado, se envían señales de alerta al cerebro que pueden generar ansiedad o mal humor. Por ello, el estrés puede "apagar" la digestión, y una mala salud intestinal puede, a su vez, disparar los niveles de cortisol.

    Para contrarrestar el exceso de cortisol y estimular hormonas del bienestar, se pueden emplear varios "hacks" biológicos. El ejercicio moderado ayuda a procesar la adrenalina acumulada, mientras que cantar o tararear estimula el nervio vago para activar la respuesta de calma. Asimismo, el contacto físico real (como abrazos de más de veinte segundos) libera oxitocina, el antídoto natural del estrés. Otros hábitos clave incluyen evitar la luz azul de las pantallas antes de dormir para no bloquear la melatonina y mantener niveles estables de azúcar en sangre para evitar picos de pánico metabólico.
