We often project modern identities onto the past, but Athens cared more about hierarchy than gender. Learn how power shaped desire and social roles.

Ancient Greek sexuality was about power, not labels

Best quote from Ancient Greek sexuality was about power, not labels

    “

Ancient Greece shows us that you can build an entire, successful civilization on a completely different set of 'boxes'—ones based on power, age, and social role rather than innate orientation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

In Athens, same-sex relationships were structured around two specific social roles: the erastēs (the lover) and the erōmenos (the beloved). The erastēs was typically an adult man in his twenties or thirties who acted as a mentor, while the erōmenos was a youth between twelve and eighteen. This was framed as an "aristocratic mentorship" where the older man modeled civic virtue, bravery, and manliness to help the youth transition into a full adult citizen. The relationship was governed by strict social rules; for example, the youth was expected to maintain self-mastery and not appear to enjoy the sexual aspect, as his primary goal was to gain a protector and teacher without losing his social honor.

The Sacred Band of Thebes was an elite military unit composed of 150 pairs of male lovers. The logic behind this organization was that soldiers would fight with superior ferocity and bravery if their partner was standing beside them. The Greeks believed that a soldier would be terrified of showing cowardice in front of someone they loved and would go to extreme lengths to protect them. This bond made the unit incredibly effective and steadfast, remaining undefeated for decades until they were eventually defeated by the forces of Philip of Macedon.

In Crete, the transition from youth to adulthood involved a highly choreographed "ritual capture." A suitor would notify a youth's friends of his intent to take the boy as his erōmenos. If the friends deemed the man worthy of high social standing, they would allow the "kidnapping" to proceed. The pair would then spend two months in the countryside hunting and feasting, which served as an intensive course in manhood and military preparation. Upon returning, the youth received symbolic gifts—a cloak, an ox, and a drinking cup—representing his new status as a soldier and a participant in civic life.

The Greeks viewed sex as a natural "spurt of pleasure" (hormēsis) that was essential for maintaining what they called "psychic homeostasis." They believed that both excessive activity and total sexual abstinence could lead to health issues like melancholy. Because of this, high-status sex workers known as hetairai were often respected as intellectual companions and even medical experts. They possessed empirical knowledge of the human body, including fertility and menstrual cycles, and were sometimes consulted as physicians or midwives to help maintain the physical and emotional balance of their clients.

Modern labels are considered inaccurate because Ancient Greek identity was not based on innate sexual orientation, but rather on social hierarchy, age, and power dynamics. In their culture, it was widely accepted that an individual would experience both same-sex and opposite-sex desires throughout their life. Instead of "who" one loved, the Greeks were concerned with the "role" one played—specifically whether a person was in the dominant, controlling position or the subordinate, passive position. Masculinity was tied to self-control and dominance, meaning a man's status was threatened not by his choice of partner, but by a perceived lack of mastery over his own desires.
