Believe in truth. To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power, because there is no basis upon which to do so
-On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century
quote
Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do
-On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century
quote
History does not repeat, but it does instruct
-On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century
quote
Life is political, not because the world cares about how you feel, but because the world reacts to what you do
-On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century
quote
The history of the Holocaust is not over. Its precedent is eternal, and its lessons have not yet been learned
-Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning
quote
When states are absent, rights — by any definition — are impossible to sustain. States are not structures to be taken for granted, exploited, or discarded, but are fruits of long and quiet effort
-Black Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning
quote
It is tempting to say that a Nazi murderer is beyond the pale of understanding. Yet to deny a human being his human character is to render ethics impossible. To yield to this temptation, to find other people inhuman, is to take a step toward, not away from, the Nazi position. To find other people incomprehensible is to abandon the search for understanding, and thus to abandon history
-Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin
quote
History permits us to be responsible: not for everything, but for something... History gives us the company of those who have done and suffered more than we have
-On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century
quote
If you think democracy is some kind of inevitable, default setting for the world, then you aren't going to have it for very long

Democracy isn't a thing you have — it's a thing you do
