Biography & Author's Journey

Maria Konnikova is a Russian American writer whose career has been shaped by the meeting point of psychology, storytelling, and uncertainty. Born in Moscow, she moved to the United States at four, an experience she has linked to an early fascination with language, communication, and the mechanics of thought. At Harvard she studied psychology, creative writing, and government, with Steven Pinker as her undergraduate adviser; after graduation she worked as a producer for Charlie Rose before building a reputation as a science journalist. Her early online writing included the “Literally Psyched” column for Scientific American, the “Artful Choice” blog for Big Think, and freelance work for outlets such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, before she deepened her academic training with a PhD in psychology at Columbia under Walter Mischel.
