Karen Armstrong

Born: November 14, 1944 – Wildmoor, Worcestershire, England

Karen Armstrong is a British author and scholar noted for her influential works on comparative religion, including bestsellers such as A History of God and The Case for God. A former Catholic nun, she has become one of the world’s leading commentators on religious history and interfaith understanding, with her books translated widely and garnering international acclaim.

Biography & Author's Journey

Karen Armstrong, born in Worcestershire, England, in 1944, is a globally recognized author and commentator on religion whose prolific body of work has deeply influenced public understanding of faith, history, and interfaith dialogue. Her early life took a profound turn at age seventeen, when she entered a Roman Catholic convent, anticipating a life of intellectual and spiritual fulfillment. Instead, she found herself immersed in a world marked by rigorous discipline and, as she later described, an anachronistic atmosphere that contributed to physical and mental hardship. After seven years, Armstrong left the order and subsequently chronicled this transformative period in her critically acclaimed memoir, Through the Narrow Gate, published in 1981.

Quotes

quote
If your understanding of the divine made you kinder, more empathetic, and impelled you to express sympathy in concrete acts of loving-kindness, this was good theology. But if your notion of God made you unkind, belligerent, cruel, of self-righteous, or if it led you to kill in God's name, it was bad theology
-The Spiral Staircase: My Climb Out of Darkness
quote
If it is not tempered by compassion, and empathy, reason can lead men and women into a moral void
-Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life
quote
Religion is not about accepting twenty impossible propositions before breakfast, but about doing things that change you. It is a moral aesthetic, an ethical alchemy. If you behave in a certain way, you will be transformed
-A Short History of Myth
quote
Look into your own heart, discover what it is that gives you pain and then refuse, under any circumstance whatsoever, to inflict that pain on anybody else
-Quoted on Religious Naturalism
quote
You also have to do it. Compassion is not just about feeling; it demands action
-TED Talk: Let's revive the Golden Rule
quote
People worship different things; there must be 'no coercion in matters of faith!'
-Muhammad: A Prophet for Our Time
quote
The family is a school of compassion because it is here that we learn to live with other people
-Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life
quote
A God who kept tinkering with the universe was absurd; a God who interfered with human freedom and creativity was a tyrant... An omnipotent, all-knowing tyrant is not so different from earthly dictators who make everything and everybody mere cogs in the machine which they controlled
-The Spiral Staircase: My Climb Out of Darkness
quote
Surely it's better to love others, however messy and imperfect the involvement, than to allow one's capacity for love to harden
-Through the Narrow Gate: A Memoir of Spiritual Discovery
quote
Some people simply bury their heads in the sand and refuse to think about the sorrow of the world, but this is an unwise course, because, if we are entirely unprepared, the tragedy of life can be devastating
-Buddha
