Jeffrey Pfeffer

Born: July 23, 1946 – St. Louis, Missouri, United States

Jeffrey Pfeffer is the Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business and a leading authority on leadership, power dynamics, and workplace management. He is the author of more than a dozen influential books, including "Power" and "Leadership BS," and his research has shaped both academic discourse and organizational practice worldwide.

Biography & Author's Journey

Jeffrey Pfeffer is recognized as one of the world’s most influential thinkers in organizational behavior, best known for his incisive research on workplace dynamics, leadership, and power. Raised with a firm commitment to intellectual ambition, Pfeffer attended Carnegie-Mellon University, earning his B.S. and M.S. degrees before pursuing a Ph.D. at Stanford University. A pivotal early moment in his career came as he realized the conventional path to corporate success was both improbable and unsatisfying for him, leading to a decisive reorientation toward academia. Following a brief stint at a military think tank that left him intellectually unfulfilled, Pfeffer returned to Stanford to pursue research that defied standard paradigms in organizational studies. His doctoral work on resource dependence theory, initially deemed too unconventional by elite institutions, would later become foundational in the field and underpin his swift rise to Full Professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business at just 32 years old.
